Philadelphia Zoo’s Big Cat Crossing Named Best Zoo Exhibit

Big Cat Crossing takes top honors in 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest sponsored by USA TODAY

PHILADELPHIA, PA (May 6, 2015) – Philadelphia Zoo today announced that Big Cat Crossing, part of Zoo360, its revolutionary animal travel and exploration trail system, is the winner in the Best Zoo Exhibit category of USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest. A panel of experts selected the initial 20 nominees and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote. Four weeks of voting in this hotly contested race for number one determined that Philadelphia Zoo’s Big Cat Crossing is the leading Zoo exhibit in the country.

Big Cat Crossing is a 330-foot mesh-engineered passageway that extends from First Niagara Big Cat Falls, over and above the Zoo’s main visitor path, encouraging large felines – lions, tigers, pumas, snow leopards and more – to stretch their legs, get outside and explore.
Zoo360 continues to expand to include even more species, and with the May 16th opening of Gorilla Treeway, Philadelphia Zoo’s Western lowland gorillas will take to the trail, enjoying long-distance travel, investigate a greater variety of environments and determine their own experiences.  This 300-foot mesh engineered overhead passageway, extending 12 feet above the visitor path from PECO Primate Reserve, will allow these primates to explore among the trees and expand their world.

“We are honored to see the far-reaching impact of our innovative Zoo360 animal trail system,” says Amy Shearer, Philadelphia Zoo’s Chief Marketing Officer. “Big Cat Crossing is a truly iconic piece of this Zoo-wide transformation. Each day since its opening we’ve looked on as visitors delight in lions, tigers and more moving over head, and to see USA TODAY  readers and zoo lovers from across the country connect with what we’re doing is truly incredible.”
