Philadelphia Zoo’s Meerkat Maze To Open

The newest extension of Zoo360 is an experience for animals and guests alike

PHILADELPHIA, PA - (June 15, 2016) - Meerkat Maze, the most recent extension of Zoo360, Philadelphia Zoo’s revolutionary, first-in-the-world animal travel and exploration system, will be open to the public on Wednesday, June 15, 2016. A system of ground-based trails and lookout towers create new frontiers for the gregarious group of meerkats to do what they do best: dig, explore and keep a lookout. Running alongside the meerkat trail is a parallel maze inviting children to get up close and personal with the active meerkat mob as they split their time between their home in Small Mammal House and the new terrain.

Six slender-tailed meerkats are the stars of the show: Pete and quintuplets Ari, Nkosi, Sethunya, Kgala, Lulama. They each have unique personalities and guests can get to know these amiable mammals better through the up close and personal experience of Meerkate Maze.

“The opening of Meerkat Maze marks another milestone as we continue to transform the Zoo experience,” says Philadelphia Zoo President and Chief Executive Officer, Vikram H. Dewan. “Zoo360 is a way for guests to see their favorite animals in a whole new way. When a child is practically nose-to-nose with a meerkat, guests recognize that we are unlike any zoo they have ever been to.”

To complement Meerkat Maze, the animals’ indoor exhibit in Small Mammal House, received a fresh makeover. Newly painted walls , enhanced lighting, acoustic panels, and scrolling graphics make for a refreshed look. Signage throughout the building has been updated using Universal Design elements such as American Sign Language, Braille and Picture Exchange Communications System (PECS), illustrations for children and adults on the autism spectrum.

Meerkat Maze, the latest installment of the revolutionary Zoo360 trail system, is a first-in-the-world, campus-wide network of see-through mesh trails, creating opportunities for animals to roam around and above Zoo grounds. This extensive animal travel and exploration system provides exciting and enriching experiences for animals and visitors alike, taking the Zoo experience to a whole new level. Now when you move around the Zoo, the Zoo moves around you. Zoo360 is currently comprised of Treetop Trail, Great Ape Trail, Big Cat Crossing, Gorilla Treeway and now, Meerkat Maze.
