Camp Counselor Assistant
Did you love camp as a kid? Have you ever wanted to learn what it takes to be a camp counselor? Volunteering as a camp counselor assistant at the Philadelphia Zoo will teach you everything you need to know.
This summer, Wildlife Warriors Zoo Camp is brand new. Campers will experience daily live animal encounters and take action to help wildlife from across the globe. Camp counselor assistants serve an important role as a mentor to young campers, setting a good example for how to become a champion for wildlife! The Philadelphia Zoo offers full-day programs (including before and after camp options) for children ages 4 to 13 years old in June, July and August. All programs are targeted to specific age groups.
As a volunteer, you will work side by side with Zoo camp counselors to ensure camp activities are completed in a safe and fun manner. Counselor Assistants will teach kids to care about animals and take an active role in saving them. Volunteers may have the opportunity to visit behind-the-scenes areas of the Zoo and assist KidZooU keepers with their daily tasks.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, currently be in high school, and have experience working with children which must be evidenced in at least one of the letters of recommendation.
Preference is given to applicants with camp experience.
Important skills include communication, a positive attitude, motivation, ability to follow instructions, professional appearance and manner, ability to engage children and provide age-appropriate supervision, and ability to work with a diverse team of campers, volunteers, and staff.
Volunteers must be available five days a week for a minimum of three consecutive weeks between June 22 and September 4.
Volunteer shifts are 9am – 3pm, which the option to start as early as 8am and end as late as 5pm. All shifts include a 30-minute lunch break.Interested volunteers may be scheduled for additional shifts.
The online application will be available from March 1 - May 7. All applicants must attend the group interview on Thursday, May 14. Details will be sent via email upon receipt of the application; please be sure to list a valid email address that you check frequently on your application.
Applicants are required to bring a copy of their last report card and two letters of recommendation to the interview. In lieu of letters of recommendation, applicants can submit completed Recommendation Form. Click here to download the form.
Those accepted into the program will be required to attend orientation on Saturday, May 3.
Applicants accepted into the program will be required to submit a cleared PA State Criminal Background Check and PA Child Abuse History Clearance. Volunteers 18 and older whose permanent residence is outside Pennsylvania may also need to complete an FBI clearance including fingerprinting.
