Want to help save frogs?

The Philadelphia Zoo is a member of the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s FrogWatch USA program as part of our commitment to saving endangered amphibians.

We invite you to join us on select public nights for this program. Join Conservation Biologists and Zoo Experts at scenic John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge to assist in this study and to learn all about our local frogs and toads. This program is perfect for all ages and families.

Preregistration is required for these dates. There is no cost. If the program fills you will be added to a waitlist.

What is FrogWatch?

FrogWatch is a long-running citizen science program coordinated by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). The purpose of the program is to collect longitudinal data on frog and toad species throughout North America to look for trends in populations, activity, and habitat use. As a citizen science program, it relies on data collection from interested members of the public, including the zoo community. During this program, participants will listen for frog and toad calls in order to identify species, all with supervision of amphibian experts.

Does this program have a fee?

The program is free, although pre-registration is required.

How do I register for the program?

Registration is required and must be done on the Philadelphia Zoo’s website.

Where is the program located?

The Philadelphia Zoo’s FrogWatch location is John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. Participants will meet at the Visitor Center.

What time is the program?

FrogWatch observations can begin 30 minutes after sunset. All listed public dates meet at 7:30pm. The program usually lasts for one hour after sunset. We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes before the program. Late arrivals may be unable to meet up with the group.

Who is this program for?

FrogWatch is an all-ages program. Families are welcome and children can assist in observations. However, the program does entail some walking. Participants who wish to leave early can do so.

Is this program rain or shine?

The program is rain or shine with the exception of storm and severe weather conditions, especially if there is a chance of lightning or high winds. Participants will be alerted to the cancellation of the program within 48 hours. The rain date for the program is the following day.

What do I need to bring?

No equipment is required for FrogWatch that will not already be provided by the program coordinators. However, we do recommend bringing a smartphone, flashlight, proper footwear for light hiking, proper clothing for the weather, and bug spray.
