Curator of Primates

Duties

The Philadelphia Zoo seeks an experienced and enthusiastic individual for the position of Curator of Primates. Reporting to a General Curator, the curator directly oversees a staff of twelve keepers. The collection includes more than 20 species of primates and a number of other taxa, and is housed in two major facilities. Primary responsibilities include oversight of husbandry, training, enrichment, and exhibition; collection planning; facility management; and review, development and implementation of safety and other operational policies. Candidates should be intensely committed to the highest standards and continuous improvement of animal care and to an inspiring visitor experience and should be willing to embrace innovative concepts in these areas.  The individual should bring a collaborative approach to working with colleagues, and a strong interest in and commitment to leading and developing the keeper staff. Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology or a similar field of study, substantial experience in primate husbandry, and three years experience in a supervisory capacity (preferably in a zoo setting). Competitive salary based on qualifications and experience.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field.
  2. Five years experience as a keeper plus two years experience in a supervisory capacity in an AZA accredited zoological park or equivalent.
  3. Working knowledge of the husbandry of all types of mammals, with particular emphasis in primates preferred. Demonstrated interest in maintaining up-to-date knowledge of species in collection through reading articles, journals, and books, conferences, etc.
  4. Knowledge of animal training principles and techniques and the ability to train keepers to implement them.
  5. Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain effective working relationships with peers and subordinates; superior interpersonal ability; ability to work effectively with diverse personalities; tactful; mature; flexible. Collaborative work style. Ability to work independently, but within the guidelines of an existing system.
  6. Demonstrated ability to train and supervise keeper staff.
  7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to prepare routine correspondence, document protocols and prepare research projects.
  8. Excellent organizational skills.  Able to manage multiple priorities.
  9. Knowledge of standard programs for word and data processing.
  10. Ability and willingness to be trained to use firearms and to participate in the animal escape response team.

Availability

Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, evenings, and holidays.  As required, may be on 24-hour call.
