Overnight and Scout Captain

Duties

Under the direction of the Manager of Overnights and Scouts and the Coordinator of Overnights and Scouts, the Night Flight Captain performs all vital functions of overnight and scout educational programming including but not limited to, Night Flight, Scout Badge, Themed and Family overnights, daytime scout programs, offsite scout programs, program design and program prep.
  • Captains lead evening events including facilitating night hikes, games and activities in accordance with the Zoo’s goals, specifically: exceeding the expectations of the guests by providing friendly, outgoing, and mannerly services and in accordance with the Zoo’s mission, specifically: conservation, education, science and recreation.
  • Captains are required to spend the night – shifts usually last 15-18 hours.
  • Work with a team of educators to facilitate night hikes, educational games and activities. Lead and mentor educators.
  • Demonstrate consistent conservation education messages in all programming areas.
  • Demonstrate understanding of group dynamics and ability to manage groups of children and adult leaders in an engaging and friendly manner that fosters a positive experience for all guests. Sleep in an area adjacent to the guests and available throughout the night in case of emergencies.
  • Possess knowledge of safety and security policies and procedures and animal safety issues.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Zoo’s animal collection, conservation programs and specific knowledge of zoo grounds.
  • Abide by all education animal-handling guidelines and exhibit the highest standard of animal care.

Requirements

Knowledge and Ability Requirements:
  • Ability to adapt to changes in schedule, programming and assigned responsibilities while maintaining a high degree of work quality.
  • Ability to learn detailed information about the Zoo’s animal collection and exhibits.
  • Ability to learn and carry out animal handling procedures for educational presentations. This includes a diverse collection of more than 200 animals including small birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
  • Ability to sleep at the Zoo overnight (shifts usually last 15-18 hours).
  • Excellent customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively with visitors, supervisors and co-workers.
  • Professional appearance and manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to adapt to audiences of different ages and sizes.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in schedule and daily assigned responsibilities.
Physical and Medical Requirements:
  • No allergies to plants or animals, which may interfere with ability to work.
  • No impairments of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance, or agility of movement (which cannot be corrected with appropriate devices) which would interfere with ability to work.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs and walk briskly for 30 minutes at a time.
Additional Requirements:
  • Successful completion of a post-offer background checks, including criminal, FBI Fingerprinting and PA Child Abuse History Clearance.

Availability

Available to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, and midnights, as well as weekends.
