"Just Because It's For Sale, Doesn't Make It Legal"

Many municipalities have restrictions on the types of animals that may be privately owned. For the most part, the regulated species listed on the Best Bets for Pets wallet card are those that fall under the "Highly Specialized" and "Always Avoid" categories; however, further research should be done in order to ensure that your exotic pet is legal in your area. Although the Internet is a good starting point, the best method for researching the legality of your pet is to contact a representative from your state, county, and local legislative office. You might be surprised at some of the regulations. Did you know that ferrets are illegal in California, hedgehogs and sugar gliders are illegal in Pennsylvania and that many common pet reptiles are illegal in Delaware?

Generally, animals listed in the "Always Avoid" category (big cats, bears, venomous snakes, non-human primates, crocodilians, etc.) are illegal if owned as private pets. And although animals listed in the "Highly Specialized" or "Proceed with Caution" categories may not be outlawed, ownership frequently comes with restrictive guidelines and mandatory regulations. Remember, too, that "Good Choice" pets such as dogs may need licenses, depending on your local laws. Before making a purchase, it is important that the consequences of and responsibilities associated with keeping one of these animals as a pet is fully considered and understood.

Guidelines and regulations about pet ownership vary greatly from state to state. In order to find out more information on a state-by-state basis, you can visit the Animal Protection Institute.
