2009 Grantees
1. Build Ivy Ridge Trail
Chris Kingsley, President of Friends of Ivy Ridge Trail
Neighborhood-led effort to repurpose the out of use R6 train line as a clean, green transportation corridor and form a part of the 22-mile Schuylkill River Trail within the city limits. Funding will go to purchase light equipment to maintain the trail.
2. West Philly Tool Library
Michael Froelich, Steering Committee Chair
The lending library, located at 4620 Woodland Avenue, is a way that members of the community can borrow as many tools as they need for a project they want to do at their home. Funding will go to purchasing tools related to making homes more energy efficient, such as caulk guns, staplers for insulation, watt meters, infrared thermometers, etc.
3. Philadelphia Business and Technology Center's Composting Program
Miller Parker and Marjorie Ogilvie
Support PBTC's composting program by helping them purchase three 100-gallon compost bins. They will engage the Discovery Charter School in the compost program as well. PBTC is located at 5070 Parkside Ave.
4. Conestoga Forest Garden
Skip Wiener, Executive Director
Create a hands-on environmental education site by planting trees and flowers that perform an ecological role in the landscape. The garden will be located in the Haddington section of West Philadelphia.
5. WePAC (West Philadelphia Alliance for Children) Nature Club
Ralph Godbolt, Executive Director
Fund after school nature clubs for 24 fifth grade students to learn about animals, plants and their interconnectedness with the environment.
6. McMichael School Garden
Joseph Blake, Master Gardener and Administrative Director of MCIC
Create a combined vegetable, butterfly, herb and teaching garden for the students of McMichael Elementary School at 35th and Wallace Streets
7. Semipalmated Sandpiper
Fund work to develop a comprehensive conservation strategy for the Semipalmated Sandpiper, a shorebird that migrates through the Delaware Bay and has experienced sharp population declines over the past several years.
8. American Association of Museums Sustainability Wallet Card
Develop and print a sustainability wallet card for distribution at this year's AAM national conference, which is being held in Philadelphia in April/May - Zoo staff will create the card and help with printing arrangements.
9. Rainwater Catchment for Wyck

Purchase rain barrels for the education building at Wyck, a national Historic Landmark house and garden in Germantown dating back to 1690.
10. Trout in the Watershed
Jessica Agner, Radnor Middle School
Raise and restore native Brook Trout to Darby Creek Watershed with help from PA Fish and Wildlife Service.
11. Jardin del Barrio, Perfecta Lacenski
Fund a series of environmental protection and awareness workshops focused on tree planting and maintenance as part of Congreso de Latinos Unidos, Inc., located at 216 West Somerset Street in North Philadelphia.
12. Liberty Lands Stormwater Management Project
Matt Ruben, Northern Liberties Neighbors Association
Implement an irrigation system as part of a larger, Pennsylvania Horticulture Society-designed stormwater management system on a 2-acre community park located at 700 North 3rd Street.
13. Youth Garden Activity
Alice Wright, United Block Captains Association
Provide an opportunity for local children (age 8-16) to plant vegetable and flower beds at 3955 Pennsgrove Street as part of a summer day camp,and also revitalize this block that is in disrepair.
14. Mantua Squre Tree Planting
Dennis Lee, American Cities Foundation
Plant 150 trees at a revitalized community park at 39th and Olive Streets.
15. UC Green Corps Management Team
Sue Pringle, Executive Director
Funding will purchase a hand-held PC and related equipment to help measure and keep track of the health and survival rate of trees planted in University City, West and Southwest Philadelphia by the Green Corps under the Tree Vitalize program.
