Duties

The Network Technician reports to the Director of Information Technology.  This position is responsible for the installation, configuration, testing, maintenance and documentation of the LAN servers.  The Network Technician also monitors network system performance, provides system administration, consults with users relative to system and software upgrades, and maintain security of the LANs.  This position also handles telecommunication responsibilities, including installation, configuration, design, and maintenance of equipment, maintenance of related documentation and the planning and administration of telecommunication technology and related assemblies.  Candidate will work with other network administrators at the Zoo.

Areas of Responsibility to Gain Experience:

1.    Support the acquisition, installation, and maintenance of LAN’s and WAN’s; analyze products and recommend use of new products and/or services.

2.    Assist in designing, installing, and maintaining data communication between servers, terminals, printers, RF technologies, LANS and remote site hardware.

3.    Serve as secondary interface with departmental system administrators providing internal analysis, support and performance management of all hardware and software platform interfaces at the most complex level.

4.    Maintain system administration rights for all users throughout the organization, including security rights, directory structure and configuration of network printing.

5.    Generate development of technical standards applications and supporting documentation.

6.    Guarantee the performance integrity and quality of databases through appropriate security measures and by controlling system capacity for existing requirements and planning for future needs.

7.    Respond to requests for assistance with hardware problems; investigate issues, identify problems, and perform repairs.

8.    Analyze, plan, and install new desktop and laptop computers; review, monitor and upgrade existing systems to meet user needs.

9.    Respond to Help Desk requests and e-mails in a timely fashion.

10.    Support the telecommunications systems, including voice, data, and video.  Analyze business needs; consult with end users; research, document and recommends solutions; maintain telecommunications security documentation.

11.    Support the telecommunication hardware, including equipment ordering and installation, required repairs and the implementation of telecommunication services.

12.    Support the organization’s consultants contracted to assist in onsite IT projects.

13.    Collect and analyze telecommunication data; prepare usage analysis and special reports.

14.    Assist in performing backup of all critical information and databases; design system to test recovery processes; implement and periodically test these recovery processes.

15.    Help maintain sufficient inventories of pertinent equipment and supplies to ensure continuity of service.

16.    Serve as a backup to the other members of IT when he/she is absent or unavailable.

17.    Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Technical Knowledge and Education:
  • Work related experience beneficial; concentration in IT courses.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft 2000/2003 Server using Active Directory, SQL, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Exchange, RF technology and Citrix.
  • Should have excellent customer service skills including the ability to develop and sustain effective working relationships with management and peers.
  • Must have strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills; be an effective communicator; be well organized and detail oriented.
  • Must be flexible to work a schedule that will include some weekend and possibly evening work.
Physical, Medical and Other Requirements
  • Must be able to navigate and access buildings and equipment across a 42-acre site.
  • Must be able to lift and move equipment up to 40 pounds.
  • No allergies to plants or animals, which may interfere with the ability to work.

Availability

Requires 40 hours per week (including one rotational day on weekend) for a minimum of 10 weeks.
