Kangaroo Island, Australia: Echidna Habitat Restoration
Conservation at a Glance
- Echidnas are very adaptable and are found throughout Australia. However their numbers have decreased with the loss of habitat, increased predation by introduced species, and use of herbicides/ pesticides.
- Restoration of habitat is critical to echidna conservation. This project seeks to document how replanting cleared land can change temperature and humidity conditions in these areas to favor echidnas and other wildlife.
- Todd has used information from wild echidnas and his own research at the Zoo to create a successful echidna captive breeding program.
- The Zoo supports the work of Peggy Rismiller at the Pelican Lagoon Research Center on Kangaroo Island, who’s been studying echidnas for nearly twenty years.
