There are three new babies in the Rare Animal Conservation Center! The first family includes the pied tamarin. These funny looking monkeys live in families called ‘troops’. These troops can range from 2-10 members. Although most wild troops contain mostly males, the leader is always a female. Today, the pied tamarin can only be found in the wild in one protected area in the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. The Philadelphia Zoo houses eight of these endangered monkeys, including twin babies born November 3, 2010! Come visit the twins, their parents, and their four brothers and sisters. Learn more about pied tamarins!

We also welcomed a Bolivian gray titi monkey to the Zoo family in 2011, Dexter, and a new baby born on January 13, 2012! These social monkeys live in close family groups. Often two family members will sit next to each other and twine their tails together; this signifies social bonding and also assists in balance and generating warmth. Opposite of most other animals, the father is the primary caretaker of the offspring. Come see paternal care at its best with the Zoo family’s newest addition born March 14, 2011.
