Lida A. Wright: A Legacy for Generations

From the gardens she loved tending, to the paths she explored in her own community, to the grasslands of Africa, Lida A. Wright admired the beauty of nature and wildlife, and felt strongly about inspiring others to join her in protecting them.

When Lida passed last year, she left a meaningful legacy. She included a special gift through her estate that reflected her love of Philadelphia Zoo and the wildlife in its care. A longtime supporter, and former volunteer who served on a special project council that raised funds for animal needs, Lida cared deeply about the Zoo’s mission.

Her love of animals and the natural world was not limited to her time at the Zoo. In 2010, she journeyed to Africa with her children and grandchildren—a transformative trip that strengthened the sense of wonder that defined her passion for wildlife. The memorable experience inspired two return visits, deepening her appreciation for the animals and wild places she cherished.

Sharing in their mother’s devotion to animals and conservation, her four children, along with their families, chose to honor her memory by joining in her generosity and creating a lasting family tribute with a special gift to Philadelphia Zoo.

Together, they made it possible to infuse new educational experiences and fun photo opportunities along the beloved African Plains path. The educational elements feature species like the southern white rhinoceros, giraffes, and Ankole-Watusi cattle. The vibrant, family-friendly installations have elevated the Zoo experience of guests, especially children who love to compare how their height measures up to a giraffe, or what it would be like to carry long horns like the cattle. These additions to the Zoo not only celebrate the animals Lida held dear, but also reflect the joy and discovery she believed the Zoo inspires in visitors of all ages.

“We are deeply honored to recognize the legacy and generosity of Lida Wright at Philadelphia Zoo,” said President and CEO, Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman. “We are also profoundly grateful to her children and their families who share in her spirit of giving, ensuring that their mother’s legacy and love of nature and African wildlife continues to inspire wonder along our garden paths.”

Philadelphia Zoo was pleased to celebrate the generosity of Lida and her family through a special event that included a plaque dedication along African Plains.

Thanks to her legacy support and the heartfelt commitment of her children and their families, guests will continue to be inspired to connect with wildlife along African Plains at Philadelphia Zoo for years to come.
